Hungary Leads the Way in Accessibility

The plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday debated the current state and future of EU accessibility policy. “We expect more funding, more attention, and more concrete results from the EU in the field of accessibility,” stressed Pál Szekeres, Member of the European Parliament for Fidesz, in his intervention.

The MEP underlined: “Hungary has achieved significant results in recent years. As a result, the entrances of government service centres are accessible, Braille maps are available, and hearing-assistance devices are provided for everyone. In addition, sign language interpreters are available to deaf persons through video messages, and a mobile application assists visually impaired individuals.”

Szekeres highlighted: “State support for national disability advocacy organisations has already exceeded 1.7 billion forints, and we have also achieved outstanding results in employment: the share of employees with disabilities has increased from 12% to 50%.”

Szekeres recalled: “The Fidesz government views people with disabilities as partners and as a resource. A new National Disability Programme has also been launched, setting objectives for the next ten years to promote equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.”

“Hungary’s example inspires Europe – now the EU should also demonstrate what true equal opportunities mean,” he concluded.
